I almost fell out of my chair when Morgan Freeman, in Episode 2, stated that the cluster of spikes at the end of a stegosaur’s tail was “known as a thagomizer”. This term was created by the cartoonist Gary Larson as a joke in the caption of a cartoon showing cave men talking about their friend Thag, presumably done in by a stegosaur. The term may have been adopted in informal conversation by some paleontologists familiar with the cartoon, and maybe even by others who picked it up secondhand unaware of its origin, but it is definitely not a legitimate paleontological term. It remains a sort of “in joke” within the paleontological community and as such did not merit inclusion in a serious production such as “The Dinosaurs”.
