Writer-director Krishnadas Murali concocts an interesting dark comedy-thriller: here’s one more to the list of “sequel” efforts that stand well above their previous instalments. The first film was a spoof of several family dramas from the 90s and early 2000s, but it didn’t strike me as a consistent comedy, and towards the end, it became more “dramatic” than “humorous.” Mohiniyattam rights that misstep, by offering new characters, an unexpected genre shift, and cohesive twists, alongside spontaneous doses of dark humour. I wouldn’t call it some new gold standard or anything, but the effort that has gone into the writing, direction, and performances is evident. Good to see Suraaj continuing his solid streak! Saiju Kurup’s confidence in the pre-release interviews and Tharun Moorthy & MMT’s high praise on social media had me thinking a lot, actually. The first film was clearly OTT material, but when comedy is neatly staged and performed, laughs can spread like fireworks in the cinema halls. That’s exactly what works in favour of Mohiniyattam, with some spectacularly funny performances from the likes of Kalaranjini, Baby Jean, and Saiju. They also ensure that REMAKING this would be practically impossible (..I mean that in a complimentary way!). The music also gets an upgrade, with Electronic Kili adding some peppy numbers. The writing also includes some smart puns (centred around words like pazham and kola), which made certain dialogue exchanges hilarious. Vinay Forrt and Jagadeesh are the wild cards, and both pass with flying colours. There are a couple of scenes (one with Sreerekha, and the other at the neighbour’s house) that’ll leave you in splits. The fact that a Drishyam-like crime gets the funny treatment (with Suraaj’s bug-eyed face that’d take a while to forget) itself is the film’s major selling point. I think they really should make a sequel with possibly another genre shift and round out the trilogy.
